THE MOST FUN I’VE EVER HAD WATCHING UTAH FOOTBALL

Sky Sorenson - November 17, 2025

Son: “Hey, Dad. Why is my sister named ‘Summer’?”

Me: “Oh, because your mother’s favorite season is the summer.”

Son: “Ohhhh, okay. Thanks, Dad!”

Me: “Of course, Jason Beck Sorenson.”

In my 22 years on earth, I am so happy to say: I have never had more fun watching Utah Football than I’m having this 2025 football season.

And believe me, I’ve watched A LOT of Utah Football.

I’ve seen the 2024 team that could NOT score. I’ve seen a team led by a 6’7” quarterback (Travis Wilson). I’ve seen a Wide Receiver start at quarterback (Kendal Thompson). I watched Joe Williams retire, unretire, and then immediately shatter the single-game rushing record. I saw Marquise Blair act like a human spear every week. I watched back-to-back Rose Bowls. I lived through the 2013 Oregon game ball-drop at the 1-yard line (top 5 worst moments of my life). I saw John White be half-man, half-animal (my 1st jersey ever). And I saw Cal’s Jared Goff shaking in his boots while throwing 5 picks at Rice-Eccles.

So why do I like watching the 2025 Utah Football team more than any other Ute team ever?

No, it’s not because of the record. No, it’s not because we just came off our worst season in years. Yes, we’re 8-2. Yes, we lost our two biggest games of the season. Yes, the College Football Playoff may or may not be in our future (39% chance right now).

But it’s because this is the most complete and dynamic Utah team I’ve ever watched.

The team is built beautifully. DC Morgan Scalley and OC Jason Beck make up the best coordinator duo Utah has had in decades. Beck, whom I would deadass name my child after, has absolutely changed my life when it comes to Utah offensive play. Like, Anton Ego tasting Ratatouille type of alteration. With, of course, the light of my life, Kyle Whittingham, continuing to lead us in his final years, along with assistants like Sharrief Shah, Freddy Whittingham, Jim Harding, Micah Simon, Isaac Asiata, and others, who are exactly the kind of high-character people that you need to help build a strong culture.

Although if I had to give a Lion’s share of the credit, it’s going to Beck. This is the most dynamic Utah offense I’ve ever watched in my life (2004 doesn’t count. I was in diapers).

Through 10 games of football, we’ve seen the offense put up 40+ points on 7 separate occasions. Averaging 41.1 points per game, 477.8 total yards of offense per game, 6.5 per play, with a whopping 55 offensive touchdowns… this is just bloody gorgeous. Trusting the defense has always been a part of my DNA as a Utah fan, but it’s so amazing to experience two sides of the ball that are both reliable and extremely exciting to watch. This season has a very similar feeling to the 2022 Utah season–under OC Andy Ludwig and led by quarterback Cam Rising–which I was practically kicking and giggling watching football every week. 2022 was one of the first years when I had more confidence in the offense than the defense. But that’s THE THING that’s different about this season: I trust the offense and defense equally.

The games where it was most apparent to me that our offense looked drastically different than years past started with UCLA. You could tell Devon Dampier was special. These performances branched into games against other P4 teams: Arizona State, Colorado, Cincinnati, and Baylor, sprinkled with a Byrd Ficklin & Wayshawn Parker masterclass on multiple occasions. Funny enough, I caught myself complaining about only beating Baylor by 27 on Saturday night. I genuinely was pissed. Where did this kind of Football privilege come from?

Of course, I would love for Utah to make the College Football playoff and/or the Big 12 Conference Championship. Having the opportunity to see Utah play or win in either of those would be the dream ending to my senior year of college. But if that doesn’t work out, I’d just be extremely grateful that I get to watch this team every Saturday.

I love this team, this program, and this university with all of my heart. I will forever remember this year for the rest of my life. Go Utes <3

Disclaimer: I am a senior at the University of Utah with about three and a half weeks until my final class ever. I’ve been a Utah fan my whole life. So, yes, this is biased. I’m so aware. I just can’t contain myself when talking about my love for the university and the football program that has quite literally given me everything and everyone that I love so dearly. Field Rush wouldn’t exist without the U.
