WEEK 5 STOCK WATCH: DODGING HYPE AND CASHING IN
Gunnar Galloway - October 1, 2025
As the 2025 college football season begins to sort itself out, there are teams with stock all across the board. Low stocks being undervalued, and high stocks that seem annoyingly over priced. Below is my stock guide for you to follow and things to consider before buying or selling what you can.
Buy Low:
1. Vanderbilt: The commodores came into this season with little to no expectations and have ripped a 4-0 start including a 31-7 win over South Carolina. Historically this team has had a hard time in the SEC, Vanderbilt is, for now, flying under the radar. If they can keep this kind of momentum though, their stock could begin to rise fast.
2. Texas: Okay, now hear me out, after a 3-1 start there is so much room to buy their schedule and profile. Their game against Ohio State was a tank in stock price, but that's exactly why you should cash in now. Arch and company are soon to go against more tougher opponents, and Steve Sarkinsian coaching is starting to pick up, Texas is a perfect late season value play.
3. Missouri: The Tigers are off to a perfect 4-0 start, earning a ranking themselves, but that ranking remains near the bottom of most polls. With a 10 win season last year and more weapons via the portal, they may be undervalued in terms of schedule talk. And if they continue winning in the SEC, the market may underappreciate their value. Cash in ASAP.
Sell High:
1. Florida State: FSU has been a heat seeking missile these past few weeks going 3-2 to start this season, upsetting every team imaginable and still standing strong. But it's not a team I'm staying high on for a majority of the year. Especially during this past loss. Sure this start has been nice, but last year's 2-10 season isn't wavering from my mind. They won't stay like this forever, selling during this win streak seems smartest.
2. Clemson: Once expected to be one of the powerhouses into this year, but enters week 5 in a huge slide. Clemson ranks near the bottom in scoring offenses, third down efficiency, and offense in general. QB1 Cade Klubnik has struggled and the entirety of the offense seems to be going down a bad path. With the name the Celemson Tigers have, they sell high before stock falls.
3. Narratively Driven Teams: Teams like Miami (who rides Number 2 in the AP Poll) and others talked about through the media right now through names and rankings are not to be trusted. Be careful of big names like Florida and immediately buy what they have.
At the end of the day, college football is a market of momentum, hype, and hidden value.
The smartest plays come from seeing through the rankings and trusting what’s actually happening on the field. Buy into risers like Vanderbilt and Missouri before the market catches up. Capitalize on struggles from proven teams like Texas before they get in the swing of things. Don’t be fooled by media darlings or name brands clinging to past success. Florida State may look great now, but cracks will always form. Stay sharp, and always think one week ahead. Because in this sport, the right pick today becomes the legend tomorrow.
