SKER’S ARE HEADED TO THE BIG DANCE

Ajay Allen - March 15, 2026

For the first time in two seasons, Nebraska basketball is heading back to the biggest stage in college basketball. When the bracket was revealed on Selection Sunday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers men's basketball heard their name called and officially punched their ticket to the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska enters March Madness as a No. 4 seed in the South Region, one of the highest tournament seeds the program has received in years. The Huskers will open tournament play against No. 13 seed Troy Trojans men's basketball, with the first round matchup set to take place in Oklahoma City. For a program that has spent years trying to climb back into the national conversation, the moment represents both a reward and a massive opportunity.

The Huskers built their résumé all season through consistency. Nebraska battled through the grind of Big Ten play and finished with one of the best records the program has posted in recent memory. Along the way, the team stacked quality wins against ranked opponents, proving it could compete with some of the best teams in the country. By the time the regular season wrapped up, Nebraska had positioned itself firmly in the tournament field, and a strong showing late in the year helped push the Huskers onto the No. 4 seed line.

Under head coach Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska has steadily rebuilt its identity. Hoiberg has focused on creating a fast paced offense combined with disciplined defense, a style that has helped the Huskers compete in a conference known for its physical play. Over the past few seasons, the program has grown more confident, deeper, and more experienced, and this year’s roster reflects that progress.

The Huskers enter the tournament with a group of players who understand the moment. Veteran leadership and balanced scoring have been key to Nebraska’s success throughout the year. Instead of relying on a single star, the Huskers have found production from multiple players on any given night. That kind of balance can become a major advantage once the tournament begins, where quick turnarounds and unpredictable matchups often reward teams with depth.

Still, the opportunity in front of Nebraska carries an added layer of history. The program has reached the NCAA Tournament several times over the decades, but the Huskers are still searching for their first NCAA Tournament victory. That fact has followed the program every time March arrives, and it remains one of the most talked about storylines surrounding Nebraska basketball.

This year’s team believes it can change that.

The matchup against Troy will be the first step. The Trojans arrive in the tournament as the champion of the Sun Belt Conference and a team that has proven capable of upsetting higher seeded opponents. Nebraska will need to stay disciplined and avoid the slow starts that often give lower seeds a chance to steal early momentum.

If the Huskers can get past Troy, the bracket opens into a potential second round showdown with the winner of No. 5 seed Vanderbilt Commodores men's basketball and No. 12 seed McNeese Cowboys men's basketball. From there, a run toward the Sweet 16 would begin to come into view, with the South Region also featuring top seed Michigan Wolverines men's basketball waiting deeper in the bracket.

But in March Madness, the bracket only tells part of the story. Every year the tournament produces moments no one expects. Underdogs rise, favorites fall, and programs write new chapters in their history.

Nebraska now has the chance to write one of its own.
