LET THE UNDERDOGS EAT. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WEEK 2
Gunnar Galloway - September 10, 2025
It’s Saturday college football, with nothing else going on, you decide to flip through the channels. Army has the ball? You stop. An unranked team takes down a ranked powerhouse?
You stop. A game in overtime? You stop. Another underdog dog walking a top 25 team? You stop. Double overtime… and Army still has the ball? And still, with every play, you remember, it's only week two.
The most electric game of the year so far was easily the double OT thriller put on by Michigan State and Boston College.
This game was not high on my list going into gameday, but about two quarters in, my eyes never left my screen. Back and Forth at Spartan Stadium will go down as a game of the week.
Adian Chiles, a man whose number would have been retired in Colorado for this game, went 19 of 29 for two hundred and thirty-one yards with a career high of four touchdowns. The man across the field went pretty insane, too, with a debut performance that would make Jaxson Dart come back to college.
Boston College’s QB1, Dylan Lonergan, threw a light three-hundred and ninety yards and four touchdowns. After an absolute trench war, this game was punched in by a 2-point conversion caught by Senior Omari Kelly.
Down at Davis-Wade Stadium, an underdog Mississippi State faced the 17th-ranked team in the country, Arizona State. Mississippi dog walked Az, building a 17-0 lead out outscoring and outgaining going into halftime. Kenny Dillingham must have dog walked harder, though, because Sam Leavitt and company showed up and showed out, eventually tying the game.
But it was all to come crumbling down as MSU QB1 Blake Shepan connected with Brenen Thompson for a fifty-eight-yard Touchdown and a late drive interception, not only winning the game but sending fans on their feet and then subsequently on the turf, taking down a goal post and $500,000 out of the pocket of the SEC, but no matter, MSU Bulldogs came to play. 24-20.
In the Swamp, USF continues to make fans question their life choices, taking down another, yes, another ranked opponent, their first back-to-back year like this since 2009. Byrum Brown threw for two hundred and sixty-three yards to DJ Lagways 222, USF QB also came to play with a touchdown of his own. After another hard fight, Sophomore Nico Gramatica hits a walk-off field goal to continue whatever is fueling this blood thirsty USF team, as well as launching them to No. 18 on the AP Top 25.
If you were at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday, you may have wondered if Avrey Johsnon and company packed up and went home, which would be fair, because they never had the ball. Army turned this football game into a clock-killing nightmare for the Cats, playing over eighty snaps, compared to K-State's 43.
Holding the ball for 40 minutes and 44 seconds, the Black Knights QB Cale Hellums didn't need anyone but him and the defense out there, scoring three touchdowns and rushing for 124 yards. Army also decided to go for it on fourth down seven times, converting six, because apparently, punting is for people who actually like giving the ball back.
And now the Wildcats sit 1-2 while an accountant in Manhattan, Kansas, wonders how on earth the receipt says $1.175 million just for the team they paid to leave, winning 24-21.
When the lights went out on Saturday, one truth felt ever more real: chaos doesn't come invited; it just shows up, ruins a fanbase's week, and leaves just like that. Michigan State, Mississippi State, USF, and Army didn’t just win games; they told stories and made Saturday just that much more fun.
